College Counseling Snapshot: Planning by Year

Eighth Grade

Teachers, counselors, parents/guardians, and students collaborate to select high school courses that are appropriately matched for the student’s aptitude, interests, and goals.
 

Ninth Grade

Counselors, parents/guardians, and students will develop a four-year course plan. Students should begin to pursue extracurricular activities that are of meaning and interest to them.

Tenth Grade

Students attend college admissions sessions at NGFS to get a sense of the differences between colleges and the kinds of schools that might interest them. 

Students continue to explore extracurricular activities that are of meaning and interest to them.

Students take the PSAT 10 in the spring.

Eleventh Grade
Fall
  • Students take the PSAT/NMSQT.
  • Students attend college admissions sessions at NGFS.
  • Students are eligible to attend college trips with NGFS.
  • Students pursue leadership opportunities in clubs and extracurricular activities.
Spring
  • Parents/guardians and students meet individually with the college counselor (January).
  • Students get SCOIR accounts and develop a college list.
  • Students take the ACT and SAT at school.
  • Students and parents/guardians visit colleges on their own.
  • Students and families attend the “Demystifying College Admissions” event hosted by NGFS.
     
Twelfth Grade
Fall
  • Students write their admissions essays in their English class and request letters of recommendation.
  • Students and families meet regularly with the college counselor both individually and in groups. Application progress is monitored.
  • Students and families attend the “Paying for College” night.
  • Students continue to attend college admissions sessions at NGFS and visit colleges.
  • Students submit applications.
Spring
  • Students receive notifications of acceptance and financial aid packages.
  • Students make their decision about where to attend.
  • Everyone celebrates!
