Summer Explorers
- Summer Explorers camp is held on the Guilford Campus at 1128 New Garden Road.
Summer Explorers is a level of summer camp that allows rising 6th and 7th graders to explore new activities and themes in an age-appropriate group. Themes for this program were created using a blend of ideas from both our Navigators and Middle School Electives’ sessions, giving the participants a bridge between the two camps. In addition to activities on campus, we offer several field trip opportunities within walking distance of campus. The smaller group size in this program provides the opportunity to do more in-depth and developmentally appropriate activities and projects.
2026 Summer Explorers Sessions
Bring your camera and get ready to turn the lens on the world around us. This session is designed to give students a chance to view the world through a camera lens as they learn various techniques to photograph people, nature, and architecture. We will visit a number of locations in and around Greensboro throughout the week on our photographic adventure. Participants will spend time each day photographing in various locations indoors and out, and will then have the opportunity to edit photos and share them with their fellow campers. A variety of camera techniques will be introduced, as well as different methods for editing and manipulating photos. Participants are welcome to bring their own camera from home, or borrow one of our loaners for the week. We will also invite families to join us Friday afternoon for our final photography showcase.
*This is a 4-day week, as we are closed Friday, June 19, for the national holiday, Juneteenth.
Strap on your hiking boots and don’t forget your compass and sun hat! Learn all about “roughing it” as we learn how to pitch a tent, use a compass, cook s’mores, and observe the natural world around us. We will go on a “survival challenge”, look for aquatic macroinvertebrates as we assess stream health, make campfire cookies, mix up our own delicious and nutritious trail mix, and make a variety of paracord creations. We will be visiting area parks, playgrounds, and streams as we hike, explore, and geocache our way through the week while we learn about the great outdoors!
Come on down and be the next conte n stant on Game Shows and Carnivals! We will explore the wild world of game shows and carnival games by testing our knowledge with trivia, tackling feats of strength on homemade agility courses, trying our luck at old carnival favorites, and pitching the next big idea to the judges! Do you know what the currency of India is called? Can you knock all the cans down while blindfolded? Spin the wheel for prizes, try to solve the daily double, and so much more!!! We will watch episodes of classic game shows for inspiration as the week will culminate in designing and hosting our original game show ideas. We’ll take “fun” for 500, please!
Welcome to our makerspace where there is no shortage of creativity, glitter, and fun! Our crafty campers will have the opportunity to create a number of different projects throughout the week as they explore a variety of crafts and work with a number of different mediums. Crafters will have the opportunity to design and create their own decals and t-shirts, make a totally groovy tie die, learn how to weave different types of friendship bracelets, and find out just how many items we can make out of beads! There will also be several "choose your own adventure" opportunities where campers can decide what they would like to do in the makerspace as they unleash their creativity.
Building on our Carpentry weeks at younger levels, this week will give participants the opportunity to hone basic skills, work on bigger projects using more complicated hand tools, and do more detailed finish work on their wood creations. Each student will choose a project from many different options and plans, including bookshelves, chests, or fun items like sci-fi ships and vehicles. If participants want to create and design their own projects, we can help them design and make it a reality.
We will also work on other wood working projects like building with wattle and daub, making natural dyes for wood, and the scrap bin challenge.
Ever wonder what makes bread rise? Or how something becomes pickled? This week, we will explore the chemistry behind baking and cooking and enjoy eating all the things we make along the way. Decorate your own apron as we spend time in the kitchen to learn about the differences between baking soda and baking powder, how to bake bread and churn butter, how milk curdles, and how to make homemade slushies. Campers will experiment with growing gummies, making ice cream and we will make “rubber” eggs. To end the week, campers will use the knowledge that they have learned to participate in the Great New Garden Bake-Off! Join us to transform the kitchen into a laboratory and have some delicious fun.
This week gives campers the opportunity to explore Greensboro and the Triad area and its many interesting places and activities. Two days of the week, participants will get to select where to eat at local restaurants for lunch. We will see an appropriately rated movie, and take time to explore some of the beautiful parks that are right here in the Gate City. On Monday, participants will have an opportunity to help plan the schedule, so bring your own ideas of fun things to do with all your Goofing Off friends!
