NGFS Students Visit Alro Steel Company in Charlotte, NC

As interest in trade schools, vocational programs, and career-focused pathways continues to grow, New Garden Friends School is committed to helping students explore the many opportunities available after high school. As part of Manufacturing Week, NGFS students recently traveled to Alro Steel in Charlotte for a firsthand look at the manufacturing industry and the wide range of careers it offers.
The visit began with an introduction to Alro Steel's history, business model, and customer-first philosophy. Representatives from both the Charlotte and Greensboro locations shared how the company has grown by embracing a "whatever it takes" approach to meeting customer needs and building strong relationships.
After gearing up in hard hats, safety vests, and safety goggles, students stepped onto the plant floor to see manufacturing in action. Throughout the tour, they observed the steel processing operations that transform raw materials into products used in countless industries across the country.
One of the highlights of the experience was the opportunity to interact directly with employees throughout the facility. Students asked thoughtful questions about daily operations, career paths, and the factors that influence the steel industry. Discussions ranged from how fluctuations in gas prices affect manufacturing costs to the growing demand for steel driven by the rapid expansion of data centers and infrastructure projects.
The visit also helped students connect classroom learning to real-world applications. They learned how materials supplied by Alro Steel become finished products used by consumers every day, including handcrafted cookware produced by companies such as Smithey Ironware. Seeing the journey from raw material to finished product provided valuable insight into the manufacturing process and the interconnected nature of today's economy.
Experiences like this are an important part of helping students explore future possibilities and gain a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom. Whether students ultimately pursue college, trade school, apprenticeships, or enter the workforce directly, exposure to industries like manufacturing helps them make informed decisions about their futures.
We are grateful to the team at Alro Steel for welcoming our students, sharing their expertise, and providing such a meaningful hands-on learning experience. Opportunities like these inspire curiosity, broaden perspectives, and help students discover pathways they may not have previously considered.
