Guided by quaker values

New Garden Friends School is guided by the traditions and values of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers. The name “Quaker” dates back to the earliest Friends, who believed that a person’s connection with the Divine does not require a building or intermediary. Instead, Quakers believe there is “that of God,” or an inner Light, in every person. At its heart, Quakerism is about recognizing and honoring that Light in ourselves and in others.

At NGFS, this belief shapes a learning environment rooted in reflection, inclusion, meaningful connection, and respect for the inherent worth of every individual. We strive to create a community where students are known, valued, and encouraged to discover and develop their unique gifts.

Our community is guided by the Quaker testimonies known as SPICES:

Simplicity – Value what matters most by focusing on purpose, relationships, and the spirit over material possessions.

Peace – Strive for harmony, foster respectful communication, and seek constructive solutions to conflict.

Integrity – Act with honesty, responsibility, and accountability in all aspects of life.

Community – Welcome and include everyone, recognizing that we are stronger when we learn and grow together.

Equality – Honor the equal and sacred worth of every individual and work toward a more just and inclusive world.

Stewardship – Use resources wisely, care for the environment, and help build a sustainable future.

These values are woven throughout daily life at NGFS—from thoughtful classroom discussions and service-learning experiences to leadership opportunities, collaborative projects, and respectful relationships. Students are encouraged to think deeply, listen carefully, collaborate thoughtfully, and grow into compassionate, confident leaders. 

Families often ask, “Do you have to be Quaker to attend NGFS?” The answer is simple: not at all. We welcome students and families of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds. What unites us is a shared commitment to community, curiosity, service, and the belief that every person has value and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
