Another great week in Rainbow! Our Choice Time unit on Water and Weather is still going strong - some experiments got a little frustrating, but our students persevered!! If you have time, please volunteer to help out here. Thank you to our fabulous volunteers!
In Literacy, first graders learned /ar/ in addition to /er/. These can be difficult to distinguish from the /r/ sound, but we are off to a strong start. We are also beginning to learn about different syllable types which will unlock so many more words and books! In Knowledge, we learned about the Aztec and started working on an informational paragraph which we will finish up next week. Keep practicing spelling words at home if you can!
Second graders started making another tree for our Phonics Forest! This week we started on /i/ and /ie/ sounds. We learned that /ie/ has three different ways to spell that sound. “I,” “i-e,” “ie,” all make the /ie/ sound, but of course, we always have those odd ducks like “Einstein.” We also covered some grammar this week. We discussed common and proper nouns and how to tell the difference between them. When talking to your student, remind them that the best way to tell if it is a proper noun is that it begins with a capital letter! In Knowledge we continue talking about Greece! We started learning about the city-states like Athens and Sparta. We are currently doing an opinion writing assignment regarding these two. Our students have compared these two city-states and are now writing about which city they would like to live in. I can’t wait to see where they choose and why!
In math, first graders are really starting to master breaking numbers and making tens. Now we are expanding what we can do with this ability - comparing sums and understanding why answers are the same or different. This helps us see the relationship between numbers and can make math quicker and simpler. For example, we all know how to solve 8 + 6 + 2 and 8 + 7, but now we’re thinking about how 8 + 6 + 2 = 8 + 8 so that’s why 8 + 7 is 1 less than 8 + 6 + 2.
In math, the second grade has started a difficult topic of simplifying strategies for subtraction. This has been a change in direction for the Plums since we have been focusing on learning strategies for addition. We have been learning about how to find unknown parts and using compensation to subtract within 200. If you find time at home, it would be great to practice the basic subtraction math facts at home with your student.
We ended our week by doing a schoolwide Peace Project together. The Lower School celebrated the day by making peace bracelets to give to others. We also did a Peace Walk around the school. During our walk we made three different stops to see the installation of our new Peace Poles. Take a look around campus next time you are here to see the beautiful work our students did to create these beautiful poles to celebrate and represent PEACE! ♥️
