We finished out Sink or Float this week by putting all of our knowledge together to build boats - and WOW your students built some amazing boats! Using just recycled cardboard and some foil, they were able to make cargo boats that could even float when carrying metal cargo. Next week we will get into water and weather choice time activities more broadly. If you have time, please volunteer to help out here.
In Literacy, first graders learned /or/ in addition to /er/ and /ar/. We also practiced more with multi-syllable words and are learning more multi-syllable heart words! In Knowledge, we finished up our paragraph on the Aztec and will start learning about the Inca next week. Keep practicing spelling words at home if you can!
Second graders have worked on many things grammar this week. We have worked on capitalization and punctuation. Part of capitalization is learning which nouns are capitalized by determining if they are common or proper. We have also learned when to add -es or -s to make a word plural. For example, if a singular noun ends in ‘sh,’ ‘ch,’ ‘s,’ or ‘x,’ then it should always have the -es added at the end to make it plural. We have also started to discuss antonyms and synonyms beginning on Friday. These will correlate with our spelling words for next week. We read more in our readers about the soccer twins and hope to finish the week reading the story “Jump!” As far as our sound spellings, we have now ventured into the word of the ‘u’ vowel, both short /u/ and long /ue/ all of their spelling alternatives. In Knowledge we continue talking about Greece! We continued learning about the city-states, Athens and Sparta and all their contributions to society, many of the things we continue to use today. We finished our opinion writing assignment regarding these two city-states which was written based on where they would like to live and why. Check out our classwork display board showing off our student’s spectacular work?
In math, first graders started working with numbers past 20! This is a big jump and an important concept to master. We’ll be making sure we all know what the “6” in 65 stands for and that we will only add it to the tens place in another number. We will be adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers past 20 to help us practice this concept.
This week our second graders wrapped up Topic C! This has been a challenging topic for all of us. It is a change in what we have been working on up until now. Simplifying strategies for subtraction has taught us a lot of critical thinking. We have learned how to find the unknown part, using compensation to subtract within 100, then 200 as well as taking from a ten and a hundred to subtract within 200. We wrapped up Topic C by applying all these strategies to word problems. Look for additional practice pages in your student’s backpack as an *optional* homework assignment during our potential snow days!
