In Writing, fifth grade writers are finishing up their outlines and beginning the first drafts of their persuasive essays about their Literature Circle books. In class, we are looking at examples and talking about what goes in an introduction, supporting paragraph and conclusion.
The sixth graders are finishing up their Literature Circle essays. They are revising and editing, and using teacher feedback to make their final packets. Once they are completed, the sixth graders will return to working on their full-length fiction pieces for the next few weeks.
This week fifth grade mathematicians reached the end of module 2, which focused on fractions. We spent Friday working on the review test, and the end of module test will be on Monday. The expectation is fifth graders will spend at least 20 minutes over the weekend preparing for the assessment. Sixth grade mathematicians wrapped up their work with decimal multiplication and began their new topic on dividing with decimals. This week we said goodbye to our old friend, the remainder, as we learned how a remainder can be represented as a decimal.
In Integrated Studies this week, we began our second unit of the year, Chemistry. We started off by experimenting with whether we could turn paper into not-paper, which led us to our first notes of the year about elements and atoms. We also introduced the periodic table of the elements which we will dive into deeper next week.
In Spanish, Galaxians have finished their “todo sobre mi” presentations! They are now going over vocabulary of the seasons and will finish up before the year ends with a story titled “Tengo frio”. Before this holiday season, we will also learn a bit about Christmas celebrations in Mexico.
Homework Binders
All Galaxy students have a homework binder that should go home with them each day. Located in this binder is a 4 week calendar where students write down their homework each day. One of our regular morning tasks is to write down upcoming work on the day that it is due. When they receive work (a reading log, math homework, project direction sheets, etc), Galaxians will place these assignments in their homework binder. This creates a system that students can use to keep track of their work to and from school, and have a reminder of when assignments are due. Parents are always welcome to check these binders if you have any questions about when work is due, or what your child is currently working on. If you have any questions about homework binders, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your contact teacher.
