Weekly News
12/8/25- 12/11/25
Fifth grade mathematicians wrapped up their unit on adding and subtracting fractions this week with their end of module assessment. We then began our new unit on multiplying and dividing fractions. To learn more about our first topic, please take a moment to read the family math letter. Sixth grade mathematicians started their last topic of the module which focused on dividing decimals by decimals. They will have their end of module assessment on Wednesday.
Fifth grade writers are finishing up their persuasive essays about their Literature Circle books. After completing their first drafts, they revised and edited them and then used teacher feedback to improve their drafts. As they finish their essays, the fifth graders are returning to their full-length fiction pieces.
Sixth graders are continuing to work on their full-length fiction pieces. We have talked about the rising action in the middle of stories this week and Galaxians have had the chance to meet with partners to get feedback on their drafts.
In Integrated Studies this week, Galaxy students have been learning about the periodic table of the elements. First, they made observations and took notes about the periodic table. Later, they built a model of the table by creating a card for each element and placing it on a large example on the floor. At the end of the week, we began talking about how atoms combine to form compounds and molecules.
Simple Gifts
Simple Gifts is a wonderful NGFS tradition that gives each Galaxy student and teacher a chance to create a homemade gift for a classmate. Through the planning and making of this gift, they have the opportunity to think about another member of the community, and possibly get to know them a little bit better. All Galaxy students should have a form in their homework binder with the name of the person they are making a gift for, and some of their hobbies, interests, and likes. While it is ok to purchase materials and/or ingredients for the gift, we ask that the gift itself be homemade rather than store bought. Non-edible Simple Gifts will be due on Wednesday, December 17 and edible Simple Gifts are due on Thursday, December 18.
Homework Binders
All Galaxy students have a homework binder that should go home with them each day. Located in this binder is a 4 week calendar where students write down their homework each day. One of our regular morning tasks is to write down upcoming work on the day that it is due. When they receive work (a reading log, math homework, project direction sheets, etc), Galaxians will place these assignments in their homework binder. This creates a system that students can use to keep track of their work to and from school, and have a reminder of when assignments are due. Parents are always welcome to check these binders if you have any questions about when work is due, or what your child is currently working on. If you have any questions about homework binders, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your contact teacher.
