Weekly News
2/2-2/6/26
We started late but got to finish our first week of choice time activities about water and weather! We got to apply some of our sink or float knowledge as we designed pattern block boats, wrote letters from a ship, tested our understanding of density, and drew some beautiful snowy scenes. If you have time, please volunteer to help out here.
Additionally, we have scheduled our next field trip! To tie in with our Choice Time units on water and weather, on 2/26 we will be visiting the Danville Science Center. Details will come in an email to families. If you are interested in joining us, please reach out to your contact teacher.
In Literacy, first graders continued practicing multi-syllable words and started focusing more on suffixes like -ing and -ed. We discussed consonant doubling (hopping vs hoping), removing the magic e to add ing (baking), and the three sounds -ed can make (/t/, /d/, and /ed/). In Knowledge, we started our new unit on Astronomy. We will be writing each day about what we learn to create a journal of our studies.
In Literacy, 2nd graders focused on vowels and vowel teams this week, including a review of spelling options for the sound /aw/: au and aw, as well as learning new ways to spell /aw/: augh and the “odd duck”: ough. We also discussed spelling alternatives for the long u vowel sound: u-e, u in an open syllable, and ue, and spent time reading, analyzing, and discussing with partners the various traits of the characters in our class reader Kids Excel.
In math, first graders continued learning how to work with two digit numbers, adding or subtracting numbers less than ten. We have discussed several strategies (pictures, number bonds, separating the ones and counting back), and students are determining the best strategy for themselves. Ask your student to show you how they do it!
