2/9-2/13/26
We completed another week on Weather and Water in Choice Time. Some of these activities stretched our brains and creativity quite a bit as we worked to compose acrostic poems, write about our watercolor paintings, use clues and graphs to determine the climate zone, and find the an atmospheric river (known as the Pineapple Express) using data.
As a reminder, we have our next field trip on 2/26. We will be visiting the Danville Science Center. Details went out to families last week. If you are interested in joining us, please reach out to your contact teacher.
In Literacy, first graders continued practicing the suffix -ed and talking about verb tense. We also did our first lesson on adjectives (our third part of speech!). We reviewed consonant doubling, removing the magic e to add -ing, and the three sounds -ed can make. We have also been practicing our fluency and our ability to find the important facts in non-fiction text. In Knowledge, we continued our unit on astronomy, learning about stars, constellations, and the moon.
In 2nd grade literacy we have conquered the challenge of writing personal narratives! I was so proud of our Rainbow Plums as we were able to produce some incredible work this week. We began by reading through a couple personal narrative examples to understand what some of the elements of writing look like. Our next step included learning how to plan, draft, then edit! We brainstormed as a class and through our planning outline and we were able to come up with some great stories. Our writing elements should include a title, characters, setting, and plot. After we wrote our final work or art, we learned that it wasn't as daunting as it seemed! We are almost done with these and hope to wrap them up next week.
In math, first graders continued learning how to work with two digit numbers, this week learning how to subtract when there isn’t enough in the ones place. We have discussed several strategies (pictures, manipulatives, number path). It’s been a little tough, but with more practice and by experimenting to find our personal “right” strategies, we are getting there!
This week our second graders continued learning strategies for decomposing a ten and a hundred in order to subtract. We continued to practice when to unbundle to subtract, also known as regrouping. We used more place value drawing as well as other concrete strategies to decompose up to a hundred and relate them to written recordings.
