Middle School Summer Assignment (sent 6/1/2026)

Dear Middle School Students and Families,

Summer is upon us, which means students are working on the long-loved tradition of summer assignments around the country. It would seem unjust to leave you out of such a long-standing event, so we have one for you, but we hope that, in its difference from the standard summer reading, you will find something that excites you. We hope the assignments will allow you to understand the value of learning that happens continuously in our lives and experience some of the joy of independent learning.

This summer's assignments encourage independent growth and exploration. They are not about a quiz in English or an essay in History. So, what are they? One of the lists is filled with amazing books, and another list with get-to-know-your-teachers activities. Yes, you do have to read something this summer and complete some required math. Some activities are about the outdoors, and some provide opportunities for reflection.

For Middle School Summer Assignments, you will:
1. Pick one book from the list.
2. Pick two “Get to Know Your Teachers” activities.
3. Learn and review 30 words middle schoolers should know by grade level, in addition to reviewing the 100 most commonly used words in the English language.
7th Grade List | 8th Grade List | 100 Most Commonly Used Words

Once you read your book and complete your activities, you will:
1. Write or type a letter letting your teachers know about the book and two other items you chose to complete from the summer assignment.
A PDF is attached to guide you through The Art of Letter Writing. In your letter, you will discuss your thoughts, reflections, and feelings on the book you read and the activities you completed. This is about what you think and what you feel. It is not about research, MLA, Chicago citations, or any others. Then in the fall, when you have returned to school, we will have activities built into our first three days of school to share our letters. These conversations will be a springboard for building relationships and community.
2. Work on the required summer math chapter assignment (Website for Lesson Tutorials: https://sites.google.com/ngfs.org/mssummermath/home).
Current teachers sent home math packets with students on the last school day. They are available at the front office on the BPC campus with Hanna and are below for families to print.
Math 7, Pre-Algebra & Foundations of Algebra | Algebra 1

So, summer is HERE! You are going to relax. Maybe you will travel or get a job. Perhaps you will meet someone interesting or develop a new skill. The wonder and opportunity of summer await. We do not want to diminish your summer experience, but we do want to keep you in touch with your academic skill sets. We also honestly want to hear your thoughts and feelings at the end.

Have a wonderful summer, and we will see you in August.

Sincerely,
The Middle School Team

By Middle School Teachers

Spring has sprung! There is some much blossoming in the middle school.

Science explorations: Students spent the first time of the week learning about the Artemis II mission and crafting their own Artemis Dream Team. Madison was very impressed with the thoughtfulness that many students put into their dream teams.

Math projects: Math 7 has also been dreaming things up! As a part of their geometry unit students have become city planners, designing “Funky Towns” full of geometric shapes. They have been measuring, designing, and labeling maps of their towns.

Skills happenings: Students wrapped up two weeks of tracking a routine that they created to support their SMART Goals for the trimester. At the end of the week they tried their hand at writing clear instructions for creating a PB&J sandwich. Ben followed their instructions verbatim and we had a lot of laughs throughout the process.

“You're a Good Man Charlie Brown”: Many of our middle school students have been extra busy during tech week for the NGFS production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. We are excited for them to show off their pizzazz during the four performances this weekend.

Bake Sale & Spring Dance: We would like to thank you for all of the delicious bake sale goodies! The Social Committee did well raising money for their “Alice in Wonderland” themed dance on May 8th.

Spring Trip: Last but not least, we are departing on the spring trip to Rock Eagle next week!  We are eager to begin our journey to Georgia; creating memories as a community. Students have already dropped off their luggage at school. They will only need their daypacks, disposable lunches, and water bottles when they arrive at school on Monday. Please review the Spring Trip Presentation for all necessary details and check your email nightly for trip updates.

MS Health Education: We are in another year of our Middle School Health Education program, and are excited to welcome back our partner, Nnenne M. Asi, M.P.H.! All middle school students attended their first of four health sessions on Tuesday, April 14. The focus for session one was Internet Safety and Human Trafficking.
Objectives:
-To identify safe and unsafe online behaviors, including how to protect personal information. Recognize common warning signs of unsafe or manipulative interactions.
-To identify red flags related to online exploitation or trafficking in an age-appropriate way. Practice responding safely and appropriately in these situations.
-To name trusted adults and resources they can go to for help. Understand the importance of speaking up when something feels unsafe, wrong, or uncomfortable.

Because of the subject matter to be taught, expectations were set for mature behavior. Nnenne will lead discussions and activities so that all students can express themselves in a safe and shared environment. All curriculum is taught in a gender-neutral construct to meet the needs of all students. Occasionally, students feel uncomfortable in these situations. If so, they are not required to stay in class and will be led to an alternate supervised location.

The next health session dates are listed below.
Tuesday, April 28 (whole group)
Tuesday, May 5 (Grade 7 Only)
Tuesday, May 12 Grade 8 Only)
