We had a big week in Rainbow! The K-2 Drama Club performance was on Tuesday and students were all able to attend. It was a big success with everyone who attended. On Wednesday, we “moved up” a grade level to get a preview of what next year might be like and had a great time. We also continued our unit on animals making coral reefs, building our own zoos, creating animal shadow puppets, and learning how penguins stay dry by doing an experiment. Next week is our last week in this unit then we will start Town. If you’d like to volunteer to help with choice time, please sign up here.
We have an upcoming field trip to Bennett College on April 16. Arrival and dismissal times will be the same. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and a water bottle. We do not need chaperones, but if you would like to join us, please reach out to your student’s contact teacher.
In Literacy, first graders continued with Unit 6, reading in our new readers, learning how to identify what noun a pronoun is referring to, discussing figurative language, and continuing to build our fluency with different spelling patterns for consonant sounds. In Knowledge, we started working on how to write our opinion of something, writing book reviews for things we have read this year. This will help build students’ skills for next year when they do persuasive writing.
Second graders worked on more of our schwa sounds and the spelling alternatives of the schwa /ə/ + l sound written as ‘ul,’ ‘al,’ and ‘il.’ We also introduced the /el/ sound, but written as ‘le.’ We reviewed the suffix ‘-tion’ and continued to read about poor Sir Gus in our decodable reader. We have never read about someone who is so luckily unlucky! Ha!
In math, first graders finished Topic C! We started adding two-digit and one-digit numbers, starting with our ones and then adding tens together. We’ll start Topic D next week and keep working on adding and subtracting 10s. Practice counting forward and backward by 10s at home if you have time.
Second grade math was another full week of learning new skills. We took our mental math skills to a new level! We are now using our place value skills and translating them into learning the “big kid’ way of doing addition to 1,000! In other words, we are learning how to add three-digit numbers stacked vertically. We are learning how to ‘carry’ or ‘rename’ the one into the next place value column. On Thursday we also learned how to do an error analysis! Part of learning how to do these problems correctly is also learning how to spot the error on problems that were done INcorrectly. We have some super math sleuths among us! The goal for the week was to be able to successfully find the most efficient solution to use based on the type of problem given. Check it out HERE!
…Critter Corner… While Shadow and Mr. Fuzzy Cheeks have been chilling out in their Guinea Pig High Rise Condo, they have agreed to share the limelight with three (hopefully four!) new friends in the classroom. We have officially opened up our Butterfly Garden this week! We welcomed four new chrysalides that are just hanging out awaiting their big day. We are keeping our eyes on the prize and watching them each day to see when our beautiful butterflies emerge from their temporary home. We hope they come out early next week. As soon as they arrive and get strong enough to enter the wild, we will have a butterfly release day one afternoon after school. Stay tuned…
