WEEKLY NEWS
5/4-5/8
This week’s glimmer: As you may have heard, we had another visit from our buddies on Wednesday. As usual, we’re not sure who loved it more – the Sunrisers or the seniors! We so enjoyed watching our students show their buddies around our space, introduce them to their current favorite classroom toys, and grow in comfort and familiarity with their favorite “tall people.” We feel so fortunate that we will get to see them again next week!
Weekly academics: This week in kindergarten literacy we introduced two new sounds, /ch/ and /sh/. Students learned that these sounds have a special name, digraphs. Digraphs are two letters together that make one sound. We read a really fun story called Don’t Trust Fish. It is so fun reading with our friends because they are all starting to read so many words! We also started our last module in math. This week our work begins with understanding place value. We talked about using tools to help us organize our thinking as well as making counting more efficient as we increase the quantity of objects we count. While we continue our unit exploring insects, TK students have also begun the process of getting assessed for literacy, math, and motor skills. When students are not busy constructing creepy crawlies and identifying bugs outside, they have been eager to work with me to show me just how much they have grown since the beginning of their time in Sunrise.
