Weekly News
4/13-4/17
In Literacy, third graders wrapped up their Adventures in Light and Sound unit. For a final project, we introduced research skills in which students chose to research and write about either the invention of the incandescent light bulb or the invention of the telephone. Ace Horizon reporters then used their research to write a newspaper article to share their information. Since completing this unit, we are now learning about Norse mythology in our new unit-God, Giants, and Dwarves. In Fourth Grade Literacy, we learned about the make up and layers of Earth. After learning about tectonic plates, we’ve recently spent time exploring earthquakes and tsunamis through readings, simulations, and in watching videos.
In Math, third graders finished their second topic of our module on fractions! During this topic we learned about how fractions add together to make up a whole. On Wednesday, we started our third topic, focusing on plotting fractions on a number line. To learn more about our next topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders finished the final topic of our module! We spent time reviewing with a fan favorite game of Jeopardy before taking our module assessment. On Monday they will have time to make corrections to their assessment before beginning our final module where we will learn about decimals! During our first topic we will focus on exploring tenths. To learn more about this first topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
Spring Trip
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Spring Trip Parent Meeting on Tuesday. If you were unable to attend, please check out the informational presentation, and feel free to email your contact teacher with any questions you may have.
Sandwiches! Each day of the trip, Horizon students will make their own lunches. The main part of this meal will be sandwiches (or wraps), including lunch meats, hummus, veggies, cheese, peanut butter, jelly, and other spreads. If your Horizoner is not used to eating these types of foods for lunch, or making their own sandwiches, now is a great time to practice. At the Horizon level, students are expected to be mostly independent with making their own lunch. The weeks leading up to the trip are also a great time to explore new foods, so students will have an idea of what they might want to eat for lunch each day.
