Weekly News
3/30-4/2
In Literacy, third graders are learning about the properties of sound through their reading and in class experiments. Fourth graders are wrapping up plans for their final invention in our Inventors unit. Later this week, we will begin our next unit-Geology.
3/23-3/27
Horizoners had a wonderful time at the Symphony on Thursday! It was so great to get to see Jeannie perform and then chat with her for a little while after the show. We enjoyed a picnic lunch before getting to play at LeBauer Park.
Third grade mathematicians finished their module on area with lots of review before our assessment. Next week, we will begin our next unit on Fractions. To learn more about the first topic of our new unit, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders continued working to add and subtract fractions from fractions and also learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers. We will continue to work on this skill next week. Both grades were so excited to start our first Math Mystery and get to solve them with their Grandfriends on Friday!
In Literacy, third grade students have been exploring how light travels through various mediums. They did a great job of experimenting with grandfriends to demonstrate how light bends and the property of refraction. This week third graders will begin learning about sound. Fourth grade inventors spent time developing inventions to move trash across the room to a trash can. This was an opportunity to practice collaborative learning and working within a small group, as well as in applying creativity and their understanding of simple machines.
3/17-3/20/26
Third graders spent the first day back reviewing what we have learned about area so far in this module before jumping right back in! We enjoyed getting to create our own floor plan for our dream houses and practicing word problems. Next week we will review before taking our end of module assessment. Fourth graders began learning how to add and subtract fractions with like units and have mastered it quickly! We also began learning about how to subtract a fraction from a whole number. Next week, we will start our next topic on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
In Literacy, third graders are exploring light in our Adventures of Light and Sound unit. We’ve read informative and narrative text about this topic, and we have conducted several experiments to learn how light travels and how shadows are created. In fourth grade Literacy, in small groups we researched inventions, such as the clock, telephone, airplane, etc. Using this research, groups wrote and performed skits as “pitches” to convince an audience about the importance of these inventions.
For Horizon homework, we have returned to independent reading books. As a reminder, third graders are expected to read for at least 15 minutes a night, while fourth graders are expected to read for at least 20 minutes a night. Once reading is completed, students should record their progress in their Reading Log. At the end of the week, Horizoners should sign their log, and have a parent sign the log as well.
As a reminder, we will be going to the Greensboro Symphony on Thursday, March 26. We will be taking out lunches with us and eating them at LeBauer Park and will have a chance to play on their playground. Hot lunch will not be an option this day.
3/2-3/6/26
Third graders continued learning about how finding area can be applied to real life situations. Along with this, we talked about how we can break up various strange shapes into squares and rectangles, making it easier to find their area. Fourth graders learned how to compare fractions. We talked about different strategies, such as using a number line and finding the common denominator. Once we return from spring break we will begin our next topic on adding and subtracting fractions. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
We had such a wonderful time seeing everyone during our Unit Celebration on Thursday! Horizoners were so excited to show off everything that they have been learning this year in all of their various classes.
On Thursday, March 26, Horizoners will attend the symphony! We are so excited to get to see Music Jeannie perform and have lunch at LaBauer Park. Be on the lookout for an email after spring break with more details.
2/23-2/27/26
Third graders quickly finished up Topic B, and moved on to Topic C where we learned about using different operations to solve for area (such as breaking a rectangle into two smaller parts with friendlier numbers). We took our quiz on Topic C on Friday! On Monday, we will begin our final topic of this module, where we will begin applying area to different real life situations. To learn more about our final math topic of Module 4, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders practiced making equivalent fractions with various strategies such as using multiplication and division, number lines, and tape diagrams. On Friday, they began their new topic where we will practice comparing fractions. To learn more about our next topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
For our Horizon Spring Trip, in addition to the Horizon teaching team, we take additional staff and a few parents to help chaperone the students. This would entail attending the trip for its entirety and pitching in to help in a variety of ways. If you are interested in chaperoning on our Spring Trip, then let your contact teacher know before Spring Break.
In Literacy, we are wrapping up are units, and beginning science units in both grades- ”Adventures in Light and Sound” in third grade and “Eureka:Student Inventors” in fourth grade. Horizon scientists are already buzzing with excitement about these new units. Additionally, we wrapped up our book clubs this week. Throughout these discussions, Horizoners engaged in interesting conversations about these novels.
On Thursday, we will share some of our work in Horizon and Resource classes in our unit day celebration from 10:30-12. We will begin in the gym with Resource teachers leading then celebration, then we will move up to the classrooms.
