Weekly News
4/20-4/24
In Literacy, third graders are enjoying reading about Norse mythology. We’ve also been learning about identifying adverbs and conjunctions in our text, and we’ve been practicing applying these types of words to improve our writing. In the past week, fourth grade geologists have been learning about the three types of rocks, the rock cycle, and natural forces that change the land.
Last week, we began our third and final round of book clubs. All of the fiction novels in this round take place in North Carolina. Horizoners have a reading schedule in the front of the book, as well as due dates for their assigned chapters are recorded on their homework calendar in their homework folder.
Third grade mathematicians completed their topic around plotting fractions on a number line. We used rulers to measure various items, and practiced reading different lengths on paper rulers in our books. Next week we will begin our fourth topic where we will start to build the foundation to compare fractions. To learn more about this next topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders started our last module of the year! During our first topic we began dipping our toes into decimals by exploring the tenths place. Next week we will start our second topic where we will continue learning the tenths and hundredths places. To learn more about what we are doing in the classroom, check out this Family Math Letter.
Spring Trip
Do you have what you need? Each morning on the Spring Trip we will review what we need for the day. This will include making sure students have their daypack, water bottle, lunch, necessary layers, sunscreen, etc. As we look ahead to the Spring Trip, this is a good skill to practice at home each morning as your Horizoner prepares for the day of school ahead. By turning over some of the responsibility for their materials each morning to your child, you can help them prepare for managing their personal items on the trip. Please practice morning and evening routines with your child to make sure they can complete them independently. We are always here to help, but we are outnumbered by our Horizoners, so being able to complete tasks like tying shoes, zipping coats, opening containers, etc. makes for a more efficient day.
