This week fifth grade mathematicians began focusing on dividing decimals by both whole and decimal numbers. We began by modeling this process on a place value chart before connecting the steps of whole number long division to decimal long division. Next week we will use the skills we have learned as we convert both metric and customary measurement. To learn more about this topic, please check out the family math letter. Sixth grade mathematicians spent the week focusing on equations and inequalities. They wrote inequalities to represent a variety of descriptions, and graphed inequalities on a number line. You can also ask them about the hungry alligator song! We then moved into solving equations with addition, subtraction before moving into multiplication. Sixth graders all received their very own “x” that they worked to get alone on one side of the equals sign as they solved for the unknown variable.
In Writing this week, Galaxy students finished working on their research reports for the Mexico unit culminating activity. Galaxians completed their drafts, did their self-revising and editing, and got feedback from a classmate and a teacher to help polish and proofread their reports. Next week, the students will shift gears and begin working on their final persuasive essays of the year about their historical fiction Literature Circle books.
In Reading, Galaxians wrapped up their Literature Circle discussions this week. Starting next week, the students will kick off a reading elective where they have a choice about what they will do during Reading time. Some Galaxy students will be independent reading, some will be participating in self-selected Literature Circle groups, and others will be joining author or genre study groups.
In Integrated Studies this week, we introduced the tech component of the culminating activity for the Mexico unit. The students will be creating a digital travel guide using Google Earth to share about a region of Mexico. The culminating activity will continue next week and we look forward to sharing them at the End of Unit Celebration!
Thank you to everyone who came out to our Spring Trip Parent Meeting on Thursday. If you were unable to attend, please check out the informational presentation, and feel free to email your contact teacher with any questions you may have.
