Weekly News
8/25/25-8/29/29
We had a wonderful first full week in Horizon! We spent time working to build our classroom community through cooperative games and various read-alouds and began creating our classroom guidelines.
In Literacy, we began the week by introducing the first units of the year - Classic Tales for third grade and Personal Narratives for fourth grade. Third graders began reading the “Wind and the Willows,” and identifying different themes within the story. Along with this, we reviewed different short and long vowel sounds and reread a story about Sir Gus, a favorite character from last year. Fourth graders have several short examples of personal narratives. Using these texts as examples, they explored elements of narrative writing, such as chronological and cause and effect story structures. Additionally, they practiced writing paragraphs from prompts and developing these paragraphs with a clear topic sentence, supporting sentences, and conclusion.
This week in math, Horizon friends set up the math section of their binder and received their new math books. Third graders began their first module on Multiplication and Division with Units of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. This included using different manipulatives to create collections, equal groups, and arrays, in relation to multiplication. To learn more about our first two topics, check out this Family Math letter. Fourth grade mathematicians began their first module on Place Value Concepts for Addition and Subtraction. We began this unit by interpreting multiplication as multiplicative comparisons. To learn more about our first two topics, check out this Family Math letter.
Note from Communications: The Horizon Handbook was shared via email on 8/26/25 and is posted on this page in the Class Resources section.
