Third grade mathematicians jumped right into our final topic on multiplication with multiples of 10s. We’ve been talking about the magic of zeros and how knowing different tricks makes multiplying with 10s numbers feel like a breeze. Next week we will finish up this topic and begin reviewing for our upcoming module assessment. Fourth graders finished their unit on problem solving with measurement, becoming professionals at converting different units of time, weight, and liquid volume. As the week came to a close we began our final topic on division with remainders. To learn more about our final topic of this unit, check out this Family Math Letter. Next week, we will practice this skill before taking time to review for our module assessment.
In Literacy, third graders learned about the Roman gods and goddesses, making connections to the Greek gods and goddesses that they learned about in their Ancient Greece unit in Rainbow. We’ve also read about how the Etruscan kingdoms transformed in the Roman Republic, sowing the seeds for our form of government. Fourth grade poets are already producing positively poetic pieces of poetry. As you may have guessed, we have covered writing techniques such as alliteration, repetition, and rhyming. In Cafe Blocks, fourth graders have had opportunities to freely write poems and/or try writing in forms such as acrostics and concrete poems.

Third grade mathematicians began a unit on multiplicative patterns with a focus on 9, 0, and 1. We learned different tricks to remember our 9s facts, and learned about patterns to help check our work (ex. An even number times an even number will always equal an even number). Next week, we will begin our final topic for this unit on multiplication with multiples of 10s. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth grade mathematicians worked diligently to learn vertical multiplication! On Friday, we will start a quick topic on problem solving with measurement. To learn more about this topic, check out with Family Math Letter.
In Literacy, third graders are well into our Ancient Roman Civilization unit. In the beginning of this unit, we have focused on skills such as reading maps and understanding a chronological timeline (as well as the tricky concept of BCE/CE). We are also learning about the skills of a historian-such as inferring meaning from artifacts and pictures of ancient ruins. In fourth grade Literacy, students prepared well for our end of the unit assessments on Friday. This week we began our Poetry unit. Finally, last week, we began our second read aloud novel during Morning Meeting-Charlotte’s Web. This classic novel has already spurred some interesting discussions.
¡Feliz año nuevo! As we return back to campus, Horizoners have begun their introduction to Latin American countries. We will be discussing diversity, celebrations and major holidays, and important landmarks.

Third grade mathematicians picked up right where they left off working to multiply and divide by 7s. They ended the week with their Topic B quiz, and jumped into our next unit where we will learn about identifying patterns with 9s, 0s, and 1s, on Friday. To learn more about this new topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders worked to learn how to multiply one-digit by multi-digit numbers vertically. On Friday, we jumped into our next topic where we will learn to multiply two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers in various ways. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
¡Feliz año nuevo! As we return back to campus, Horizoners have begun their introduction to Latin American countries. We will be discussing diversity, celebrations and major holidays, and important landmarks.
