Third graders quickly finished up Topic B, and moved on to Topic C where we learned about using different operations to solve for area (such as breaking a rectangle into two smaller parts with friendlier numbers). We took our quiz on Topic C on Friday! On Monday, we will begin our final topic of this module, where we will begin applying area to different real life situations. To learn more about our final math topic of Module 4, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders practiced making equivalent fractions with various strategies such as using multiplication and division, number lines, and tape diagrams. On Friday, they began their new topic where we will practice comparing fractions. To learn more about our next topic, check out this Family Math Letter.
For our Horizon Spring Trip, in addition to the Horizon teaching team, we take additional staff and a few parents to help chaperone the students. This would entail attending the trip for its entirety and pitching in to help in a variety of ways. If you are interested in chaperoning on our Spring Trip, then let your contact teacher know before Spring Break.
In Literacy, we are wrapping up are units, and beginning science units in both grades- ”Adventures in Light and Sound” in third grade and “Eureka:Student Inventors” in fourth grade. Horizon scientists are already buzzing with excitement about these new units. Additionally, we wrapped up our book clubs this week. Throughout these discussions, Horizoners engaged in interesting conversations about these novels.
On Thursday, we will share some of our work in Horizon and Resource classes in our unit day celebration from 10:30-12. We will begin in the gym with Resource teachers leading then celebration, then we will move up to the classrooms.

In literacy, both grades are wrapping up their units. third graders are reviewing major concepts of learning about the Roman Empire, as well as, grammar and vocabulary from the unit. They are also revising and editing an opinion piece about which Roman god should have a statue created for. Fourth grade is in the process of completing a personal poetry collection. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to select your favorite poem and share that with the class. In other literacy news, Horizoners continue to meet about their book club novels. We have one more week to complete these books and share responses and conversation.
Third grade mathematicians worked hard to master our first topic on understanding area. On Tuesday we took our first quiz before jumping into our next topic where we started to learn about the equation used to find area. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders worked hard to learn how to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number and a mixed number into an improper fraction. We took our topic quiz on Wednesday before jumping into our next topic on creating equivalent fractions. To learn more about our next topic, check out this Family Math Letter.

Last week we began another round of book clubs. Every student has been assigned a book to read over the next several weeks and we will meet regularly about these books. Each student has a reading schedule taped to the inside cover of their book, as well as their reading schedule is recorded on their homework calendar. For each meeting, Horizoners should have completed their reading as well as completed a reaction sheet to prepare for the meeting.
In Literacy, third graders are continuing to learn about the history of Rome-most recently we’ve read about Julius Caesar and the expansion from a Roman republic to an empire. We have also looked at the differences between myths and legends-such as by reading accounts of roaming gods and legends about Julius Caesar and “The Sword of Damocles”. In fourth grade literacy, Horizon poets have explored a variety of techniques, such as using repetition, alliteration, simile, and metaphor. Also, we have focused on identifying the figurative meanings in poems that we’ve read. We have applied these skills and techniques to several drafts of our own poetry.
This week in math third graders began learning the foundations to understand area. We have used different manipulatives to practice counting how many square units fill up different shapes, learning that different shapes might have the same area and the same shapes that are different sizes may have different area! Fourth graders have jumped into fractions. We have talked about how to decompose fractions into the sum of fractions, and how to represent them in different ways.

Horizon mathematicians spent this week reviewing for our assessment on Friday with a fan favorite game of Jeopardy. On Tuesday we will make corrections for our test before beginning our new module. Third graders will begin their module on multiplication and area. We will start by learning about what area is before learning how to solve for it. To learn more about this topic, check out this Family Math Letter. Fourth graders will begin their new module on fractions. We will begin by learning how to decompose and make equivalent fractions.
