Navigators (Rising 4th-5th)

Summer Navigators

  • Summer Navigators camp is held on the Guilford Campus at 1128 New Garden Road.

Summer Navigators is a level of summer camp that allows rising 4th and 5th graders to explore new activities and themes in an age-appropriate group. Themes for this program were created using a blend of ideas from both our Adventures and Explorers’ sessions, giving the participants a bridge between the two camps. The smaller group size in this program provides the opportunity to do more in-depth and developmentally appropriate activities and projects.

Space is available in all sessions unless noted below in the weekly listings.

2024 Summer Navigators Sessions

*This is a 4-day week, as we are closed Wednesday for the national holiday, Juneteenth.

Welcome brave travelers to a week of trade and exploration around the globe! Together we will explore the history of the Silk Routes, and the art, culture, and merchandise traded between Europe and Asia in the Middle Ages. We will make fine goods to trade along the way like soap carvings, spice mixes, and candles. We will make and learn to use an abacus, make and eat noodles, and drink our own spiced tea. By the end of our adventures, all traders will be skilled in creating trade goods, navigating the high seas, and have a healthy appetite for trying new and unknown things.

This session is currently full. You may add your camper to the waitlist through the Enrollment screen in CampSite. There is no cost to be added to the waitlist, and you will be notified by email if a space becomes available.

Take a walk on the wild side as we learn about the amazing and crazy creatures that live on our planet as we jump into all things furry, feathered and finned. We will explore wild and domesticated animals, have critter visitors, and make animal crafts and dog biscuits for our canine friends to donate to a local rescue. We will also investigate several unverified cryptid creatures that could be out there. On Friday, we will visit the NC Zoo for a final animal adventure. Let the wild rumpus begin!

Come celebrate Halloween in July, when we learn all about the many traditions that have come together to create our modern day Halloween traditions! Make Halloween decorations, create simple costumes, carve Jack o’ Lanterns, decorate tote bags for candy collection, and learn all about bats and black cats. Find out what kids collected as treats instead of candy over the years, and stir a witch’s brew in a smoking cauldron. We will make our own candy treats and go trick or treating on Friday all over our campus! We will get spooky, but not scary this week. No tricks, only treats!

This session will give participants the opportunity to hone basic skills using hand tools and learn more finish work techniques on their wood creations, including sanding and staining with eco-friendly stains. Each builder will choose a project from many options and plans, including the classic treasure chest, bookshelf, toolbox, and more. We will also complete other wood craft projects and expand on other activities outside the workshop!

Swashbuckling is taken to the next level as this camp will encounter more challenging daily treasure hunts, and solve mysterious puzzles and riddles left by the pirates of yore. We will learn how to use and make a compass. We will make our own flags, pieces of eight, and sail our own pirate ships. Our mateys will make treasure maps, hide treasure for the crew to try and find, and fight off scurvy with lemon/lime aids. Learn about life on a pirate ship and the pirate code of conduct. We will also hear pirate tales galore, including the New Garden tale of Brad the pirate. Action and adventure on the high seas awaits!

This session gives participants the chance to have fun playing games and sports combined with venturing out to discover fun around town. We will explore local parks, see some local oddities, play tag and card games, and compete in goofy 60 second challenges. We will make our own lunch, and go out to eat another day, shop for movie snacks and watch a movie, and make cookies and brownies. Come hang out and have a goofy, fun week!
